Fat cells, TEM
Fat cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through fat (adipose) tissue, consisting of fat-storing cells (adipocytes, green) supported by connective tissue. Adipocytes store energy as an insulating layer of fat under the skin and the majority of the cells volume is taken up by a large lipid (fat or oil) droplet. Fat accumulation starts with a few small lipid droplets which coalesce to make one large droplet. When mature, an adipocyte may be 10 or 20 times its original size. Magnification: x4500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of fat cells. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we are provided with a detailed section through adipose tissue, which is primarily composed of fat-storing cells known as adipocytes. The image reveals the connective tissue that supports these adipocytes, highlighting their crucial role in energy storage and insulation within our bodies. Adipocytes store energy in the form of a large lipid droplet, occupying the majority of their volume. It is fascinating to observe how small lipid droplets gradually merge to form one substantial droplet as fat accumulation occurs. Under magnification at x4500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found within our own biology. The vibrant green colouration applied to the adipocytes adds an artistic touch while still maintaining scientific accuracy. By exploring images like this one, we gain insight into various aspects of human anatomy and physiology. This particular print serves as a reminder that even seemingly mundane components such as fat cells play essential roles in maintaining our overall health and well-being.
