Aratus planisphere, 1708

Aratus planisphere. This is plate 8 from the 1708 edition of the star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica by the Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665). It shows the Earth-centred (geocentric) worldview based on a 9th-century manuscript of Phaenomena by 3rd-century BC Greek philosopher Aratus. Circling the Earth are the Moon, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the zodiac. Mercury and Venus are orbiting the Sun. Harmonica Macrocosmica, first published in 1660, had 30 colour plates with Latin text. This edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Aratus planisphere, a remarkable piece of astronomical artwork from 1708. Created by Andreas Cellarius, a renowned Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer, this plate is part of his star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica. The planisphere illustrates an Earth-centered (geocentric) worldview based on the ancient Greek philosopher Aratus' manuscript called Phaenomena. Intricately designed, the image depicts celestial bodies orbiting around our planet. Circling the Earth are the Moon, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the zodiac constellations. Mercury and Venus can be seen orbiting around the Sun in this geocentric representation. Harmonica Macrocosmica was initially published in 1660 and consisted of 30 color plates accompanied by Latin text. This particular edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk. The print not only captures an exquisite piece of historical astronomy but also offers a glimpse into humanity's understanding of space during the 17th century. It serves as a testament to both scientific progress over time and our fascination with exploring the cosmos. With its intricate details and rich symbolism, this artwork invites viewers to ponder upon centuries-old cosmological beliefs while appreciating Cellarius' artistic talent in bringing these concepts to life through his illustrations.
