Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration, ophthalmoscope image. Numerous yellow drusen spots are seen on the retina, the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eyeball. The macula is the area of the retina responsible for central vision, which is the sharpest. It is not known what causes macular degeneration, although old age, poor nutrition and overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight have all been implicated. The main symptom is a loss of central vision, meaning reading and delicate tasks become difficult or impossible. Some distortion of peripheral vision may also occur. There is no effective treatment for this kind of degeneration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the effects of macular degeneration, a condition that affects the central vision and can make reading and delicate tasks challenging or impossible. The ophthalmoscope image reveals numerous yellow drusen spots scattered across the retina, which is the light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eyeball. These circular deposits are seen in varying sizes and shapes, creating a visually striking pattern. Macular degeneration primarily affects the macula, an area within the retina responsible for sharp central vision. While its exact cause remains unknown, factors such as old age, poor nutrition, and overexposure to ultraviolet radiation have been linked to this degenerative disease. The photograph also highlights how this disorder impacts blood vessels within the eye. Disturbances in these vessels contribute to further visual impairments and may lead to peripheral vision distortion. Unfortunately, there is currently no effective treatment available for this form of macular degeneration. As researchers continue their efforts to understand this complex condition better, images like these captured by ophthalmic tools such as fundus cameras provide valuable insights into diagnosing and monitoring its progression. This print from Science Photo Library serves as a powerful reminder of both our intricate ocular health system and the challenges faced by individuals living with macular degeneration.
