TEM of Escherichia coli 0157: H7 bacteria

E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria. Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria, cause of foodborne illness. Several cells are seen sectioned at different angles. This E.coli strain was responsible for the outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland in 1996, when over a dozen people died & hundreds were taken ill. It causes bloody diarrhoea and occasionally kidney failure, particularly in the elderly & very young. The strain originates from the intestines of some cattle and spreads to contaminate beef and milk. Pasteurisation of milk and thorough cooking of all meat helps to prevent its transmission. Magnification: x100, 000 at 8x10 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the TEM of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria, a notorious strain known for causing foodborne illness. The image reveals several cells sectioned at different angles, showcasing the intricate details of this harmful microbe. In 1996, this particular E. coli strain caused a devastating outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland, resulting in numerous fatalities and hundreds falling ill. Its effects are particularly severe, leading to bloody diarrhea and even kidney failure, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children. Originating from the intestines of certain cattle, this dangerous bacterium spreads through contamination of beef and milk. However, preventive measures like pasteurization of milk and thorough cooking of all meat can help curb its transmission. At a magnification level of x100,000 on an 8x10 inch size print, this photograph offers a glimpse into the world unseen by the naked eye. It serves as a reminder that despite their minuscule size, microbes like Escherichia coli 0157:H7 have immense potential to cause widespread harm if not properly managed. This image is part of Science Photo Library's collection on bacteriology and microbiology. It sheds light on the importance of understanding these microorganisms to combat diseases like gastroenteritis caused by bacterial infections.
