Neurofibromatosis, 17th century artwork

Neurofibromatosis. 17th century artwork of a man with neck deformities (neurofibromas) due to neurofibromatosis. These tumours arise from the fibrous coverings of nerves. Although these growths are harmless, they can lead to physical deformation and may turn cancerous. The artwork is by the Spanish painter Jusepe Lo Spagnoletto de Ribera (1591-1652). The original artwork was composed using red chalk. This copy is from the German book Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century artwork, created by the renowned Spanish painter Jusepe Lo Spagnoletto de Ribera, depicts a man with neck deformities caused by neurofibromatosis. Neurofibromas, which are benign tumors originating from the fibrous coverings of nerves, have led to physical deformation in this individual. The red chalk composition adds depth and intensity to the piece. Originally featured in Eugen Hollander's book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921, this print offers a glimpse into historical medical illustrations. Dr. Hollander himself was both an art historian and physician who recognized the significance of art as a means to depict various medical conditions. The image showcases the anatomical abnormalities associated with neurofibromatosis while highlighting its impact on human lives during that era. Although these growths are generally harmless, they can lead to severe physical deformities and even turn cancerous if left untreated. As we observe this monochromatic portrayal of an adult male afflicted with neurofibromatosis, we gain insight into the history of medicine and dermatology. This artwork serves as a testament to our ongoing quest for understanding diseases throughout different periods of time. Science Photo Library has preserved this significant piece as part of their collection, allowing us to appreciate not only its artistic value but also its contribution to medical knowledge and research.
