Global surface currents 2005-2007 C016 / 8117
Global surface currents 2005-2007. Computer visualisation showing ocean surface currents around the world, centred on the Pacific Ocean, during the period from June 2005 to December 2007. The temperature of the waters is colour-coded from blue (cold), through yellow, to red (hot). This visualisation was produced using model output from the joint MIT/JPL project: Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2). ECCO2 uses the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) general circulation model (MITgcm) to synthesise satellite and in-situ data of the global ocean and sea-ice at resolutions that begin to resolve ocean eddies and other narrow current systems, which transport heat and carbon in the oceans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Global surface currents 2005-2007" showcases a stunning computer visualization of ocean surface currents around the world. The image, centered on the Pacific Ocean, spans from June 2005 to December 2007 and provides a mesmerizing display of the Earth's intricate hydrological systems. The color-coded temperature scale adds an artistic touch to this scientific masterpiece. Starting with cool blue hues representing colder waters, transitioning through vibrant yellows, and culminating in fiery reds symbolizing warmer regions, it beautifully captures the dynamic nature of our planet's oceans. Created using model output from the joint MIT/JPL project called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO2), this visual representation combines satellite and in-situ data at resolutions that reveal even narrow current systems and eddies. These intricate movements play a crucial role in transporting heat and carbon throughout our oceans. As we gaze upon this artwork, we are reminded of how interconnected our world truly is. From coastlines stretching across continents to vast expanses like Antarctica or Southeast Asia, these global surface currents shape our environment on both local and global scales. This extraordinary piece serves as a testament to human ingenuity in understanding Earth's complex systems. It invites us to appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its profound implications for climate science research and environmental stewardship.
