Global surface currents 2005-2007 C016 / 8120
Global surface currents 2005-2007. Computer visualisation showing ocean surface currents ff the coast of Asia, during the period from June 2005 to December 2007. The main current system operating in this area is known as the Kuroshio Current (diagonal, upper centre and lower left). This visualisation was produced using model output from the joint MIT/JPL project: Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2). ECCO2 uses the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) general circulation model (MITgcm) to synthesise satellite and in-situ data of the global ocean and sea-ice at resolutions that begin to resolve ocean eddies and other narrow current systems, which transport heat and carbon in the oceans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Global surface currents 2005-2007" showcases a computer visualization of ocean surface currents off the coast of Asia. Spanning from June 2005 to December 2007, this stunning artwork provides an intricate depiction of the main current system in this region known as the Kuroshio Current. Created using model output from the joint MIT/JPL project called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2), this visual representation combines satellite and in-situ data to synthesize a comprehensive view of global oceanic movements. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's general circulation model (MITgcm) employed by ECCO2 enables resolutions that begin to resolve ocean eddies and other narrow current systems responsible for heat and carbon transport within our oceans. The image highlights not only geographical features such as continents, seas, and coastal areas but also emphasizes how these surface currents play a crucial role in shaping Earth's hydrological systems. As we observe Southeast Asia's coastline alongside Japan and China, it becomes evident how interconnected our planet is through these dynamic water movements. Provided by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this artwork serves as a testament to humanity's continuous efforts in understanding our environment. It offers valuable insights into Earth science, environmental science, mapping techniques, and hydrology while showcasing the beauty and complexity inherent in nature's processes.
