Plant stomata, light micrograph
Plant stomata. Light micrograph of stomatal pores on the surface of a kidney bean (Phaseolus sp.) leaf. The stomata are gaps (white) within two guard cells (blue, kidney-shaped). Stomata are pores that regulate the exchange of gases and water vapour into and out of the plant. The guard cells regulate this by expanding and deflating in response to osmotic pressure. When they expand, this causes them to move apart from one another and open the pore. This image was created using an epithelial peel to chemically remove the top layer of the leaf. Magnification: x230 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of plant stomata, captured through a light micrograph. The image features stomatal pores on the surface of a kidney bean leaf, revealing their essential role in regulating gas and water vapor exchange within plants. These stomata are visible as gaps, contrasting against the two guard cells that enclose them in a distinct blue shade. The mesmerizing process by which these guard cells control gas exchange is also highlighted. Through expansion and deflation driven by osmotic pressure changes, they orchestrate the opening and closing of the pore. As they expand, they move apart from each other, allowing the pore to open up for efficient gas exchange. To create this stunning visual representation, an epithelial peel technique was employed to chemically remove the top layer of the leaf while preserving its delicate structure. With a magnification level of x230 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, every intricate detail is brought to life. This photograph not only offers an aesthetic delight but also serves as a valuable educational tool in understanding plant anatomy and biology. It sheds light on how plants adapt and survive through processes like transpiration and water evaporation facilitated by these microscopic openings called stomata.
