Prion disease treatment, artwork C018 / 1838

Prion disease treatment. Artwork of three pyramidal neurons (nerve cells). The cell at left is healthy. The cell at back has died because of a prion (pink) infection. The cell at right is infected with prions and has been treated with a PERK inhibitor drug (yellow). Prions are abnormal proteins that cause a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases including BSE in cows and CJD in humans. Abnormal infectious prions directly change normal prions found in the brain to the abnormal form and prevent the synthesis of essential proteins. This leads to neuronal death. PERK inhibitors allow normal protein synthesis to continue, preventing neurodegeneration. Such drugs also have the potential to treat Alzheimers disease and Parkinsons disease

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Prion Disease Treatment" offers a visual representation of the devastating effects of prion infections on nerve cells and the potential for treatment. The print showcases three pyramidal neurons, each depicting a different stage in the progression of prion disease. The leftmost cell stands as a symbol of health, untouched by the destructive influence of prions. In stark contrast, the cell at the back represents death caused by a pink-colored prion infection. Prions are abnormal proteins that induce fatal neurodegenerative diseases like BSE in cows and CJD in humans. However, there is hope depicted in this artwork. The cell on the right demonstrates an infected neuron that has undergone treatment with a PERK inhibitor drug represented by its yellow coloration. These inhibitors allow normal protein synthesis to continue within infected cells, preventing neurodegeneration and offering protection against further damage. Beyond their potential to combat prion diseases, such drugs hold promise for treating other debilitating conditions like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. By enabling essential protein synthesis while impeding abnormal changes induced by infectious prions, PERK inhibitors offer new avenues for medical intervention. Through this thought-provoking illustration created by Russell Kightley from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into both the destructive nature of prion diseases and the remarkable possibilities presented by pharmacological advancements in neuroscience research.
