Staphylococcus aureus bacteria

Staphylococcus aureus. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These Gram-positive bacteria cause skin infections and often grow in grape-like clusters of small spheres (cocci). S. aureus is extremely common in humans, living harmlessly on the skin and inside the nose, throat and large intestine. If S. aureus multiplies inside blocked pores in the skin, it causes pus to build up forming an acne spot or a boil. Inside the body this bacteria may also cause abscesses and most types of suppurative infection. Treatment is with antibiotics if the infection is serious. Magnification: x11, 200 at 6x4.5cm size. Magnification; x12, 000 at 5x7cm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © PROF S. CINTI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in all its intricate glory. Colored with vibrant hues, this Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) reveals the fascinating world of these Gram-positive bacteria that are notorious for causing skin infections. The grape-like clusters of small spheres, known as cocci, create a visually stunning pattern. While S. aureus is commonly found on human skin and inside various body parts such as the nose, throat, and large intestine without causing harm, it can wreak havoc if it multiplies within blocked pores. This leads to the formation of acne spots or painful boils as pus accumulates beneath the surface. However, their impact extends beyond just superficial issues. Inside our bodies, these resilient bacteria have been known to cause abscesses and various types of suppurative infections. Fortunately, antibiotics offer an effective treatment option for serious cases. The magnification level at which this image was captured allows us to appreciate every intricate detail of these microorganisms. At 6x4.5cm size with a magnification of x11,200 or 5x7cm size with a magnification of x12,000 - we are given a glimpse into their microscopic world. This remarkable print serves as a reminder of both the beauty and potential dangers that exist within our own bodies - showcasing the delicate balance between harmless coexistence and harmful infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
