Satellite view of the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada

September 7, 2011 - Satellite view of the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada. Arising from headwaters around Mount Robson in the Rocky Mountains, the Fraser River starts as a fast-moving stream. Flowing through braided channels, the Fraser River meanders toward the sea, emptying through multiple outlets. The river angles northward around the Columbia Mountains, picking up so much sediment that it appears brown by the time it reaches Quesnel. Near the coast, the river flows over flatter terrain, so it slows down and spreads out. On the final leg of its journey, the Fraser travels through the city of Vancouver. The riveras abundant sediment forms a distinct plume west of Vancouver, extending across the Strait of Georgia to the eastern shore of Valdes Island

EDITORS COMMENTS
This satellite view of the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada showcases the remarkable journey of this majestic waterway. Originating from Mount Robson in the Rocky Mountains, the river begins as a swift stream before winding its way through braided channels towards the sea. As it flows northward around the Columbia Mountains, it accumulates an abundance of sediment, giving it a distinct brown hue by the time it reaches Quesnel. Approaching the coast, where the terrain becomes flatter, the Fraser River gradually slows down and spreads out. Its final stretch takes it through Vancouver, where its sediment-rich waters create a striking plume that extends across the Strait of Georgia to Valdes Island's eastern shore. This breathtaking image captures not only nature's beauty but also highlights various geographical features such as mountain ranges, estuaries, straits, and islands along its path. The intricate network of waterways intertwines with rural landscapes and urban cityscapes alike. The Fraser River serves as a vital lifeline for both humans and wildlife in this region.
