The non-dividing cell nuclei are blue. In the dividing cell, the genetic material (chromosomes) is red. During metaphase, the chromosomes (which contain DNA) form this line (the metaphase plate). They will be dragged apart (left and right) by structures called microtubules (not stained here). This will form the two genetically identical daughter cells that are the end product of mitosis.
