Cirrhosis of the liver, light micrograph

Cirrhosis of the liver. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue affected by cirrhosis, showing a cluster of hepatocyte cells (orange) encircled by a significant excess of reticular (collagen) fibres (black). Cirrhosis of the liver is a disease often caused by viral hepatitis or alcoholism. It is characterised by the destruction of hepatocytes and the constant regeneration, but abnormal production, of fibrous tissue that progressively replaces the islands of hepatocytes. The source of the overproduction of reticular fibres is the hepatic stellate cell. The cirrhotic liver has reduced blood flow leading to venous obstruction in other organs. Magnification: x40 when printed 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of cirrhosis of the liver, a condition characterized by the destruction and abnormal regeneration of hepatocytes, as well as excessive production of fibrous tissue. The image reveals a cluster of orange-colored hepatocyte cells surrounded by an overwhelming abundance of reticular (collagen) fibers in black. Cirrhosis is often caused by viral hepatitis or chronic alcoholism, leading to significant damage to the liver. This disease progressively replaces healthy islands of hepatocytes with scar tissue, resulting in impaired liver function. The hepatic stellate cell is responsible for the overproduction of reticular fibers seen here. The consequences extend beyond just the liver itself; reduced blood flow can lead to venous obstruction in other organs throughout the body. This light micrograph provides valuable insights into this destructive process at a magnification level of x40 when printed 10 centimeters tall. By shedding light on this complex biological phenomenon, this image from Science Photo Library serves as a powerful tool for researchers and medical professionals studying cirrhosis and its underlying mechanisms. It highlights both the beauty and fragility within our own bodies while emphasizing the importance of understanding and addressing chronic liver diseases like cirrhosis.
