Retina, SEM
Retina. Coloured freeze-fracture scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the layers of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside of the eye. Rod and cone cells (green cylindrical objects, upper frame) form the outer layer of the retina. The highly-sensitive rods respond to dim light, while the cones detect red, blue and green light. Signals from these neurons (nerve cells) are passed along a chain of other neurons to the optic nerve, which carries them on to the brain. Magnification: x750 at 6x7cm size
