EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork, titled "Female Groin Arteries" offers a detailed dissection of a female groin to showcase the areas supplied by the internal iliac artery and its branches. Created in 1825 by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet, this illustration is plate 233 from volume 4 of his renowned anatomy atlas, Manuel d'anatomie descriptive du corps humain. The image provides an axial view of the abdomen, revealing the bladder on the left and rectum on the right as they hang from the abdominal cavity. At the bottom center lies the anus, where we can observe how the internal pudendal artery supplies blood to external genitalia. This anatomical masterpiece sheds light on both historical medical practices and our understanding of human anatomy during that era. Produced with meticulous detail by artist Haincelin under Cloquet's guidance, this artwork showcases various components of our circulatory system. It highlights not only arteries but also their vital role in supplying oxygenated blood throughout our bodies. As a significant contribution to medical history, this print serves as a testament to Cloquet's dedication to advancing anatomical knowledge. Its inclusion in volume 4 emphasizes his focus on illustrating both circulatory and respiratory systems for educational purposes. Overall, this remarkable piece combines artistry with scientific precision while offering us insight into early medical exploration and understanding of female groin arteries in particular.
