Poster Print : Stem cell-derived retinal cells
Poster Prints from Science Photo Library
Stem cell-derived retinal cells
Stem cell-derived retinal cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells that have been derived from human embryonic stem cells (HESC). ZO-1 tight junction protein is green, and cell nuclei are red. RPE is the pigmented cell layer just outside the retina in the eye that nourishes retinal visual cells. HESC are pluripotent - they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 cell types in the human body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. This ability makes them a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as Parkinsons and insulin-dependent diabetes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases stem cell-derived retinal cells, offering a glimpse into the remarkable potential of regenerative medicine. The image, captured using fluorescence light microscopy, reveals retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (HESC). In this micrograph, the ZO-1 tight junction protein appears in vibrant green, while the cell nuclei are depicted in striking red. The RPE layer is situated just outside the retina and plays a crucial role in nourishing retinal visual cells. HESCs possess pluripotency, meaning they can differentiate into any of the 200 cell types found within our bodies. The specific type of mature cell they become depends on biochemical signals received during their development. This extraordinary ability positions them as a promising source for repairing damaged tissues associated with diseases like Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes. While these advancements hold immense therapeutic potential, it is important to acknowledge that stem cell research remains controversial due to ethical considerations surrounding embryo usage. Nevertheless, this photograph highlights the groundbreaking progress being made at the intersection of biology and medicine. Captured by Science Photo Library's expert lens, this image not only provides valuable insights into cellular biology but also serves as a reminder of how scientific exploration continues to push boundaries towards improving human health and vision.
