Abnormal mitosis
Mitosis. Fluorescence micrograph of abnormal metaphase during mitosis (nuclear division). During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. At metaphase the chromosomes, which consist of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, green), and are made up of two identical chromatids, line up along the centre of the cell. This allows equal segregation of the chromatids into the daughter nuclei by microtubules (purple), part of the cells cytoskeleton. However in this cell the chromosomes are not aligned along the centre of the cell. Abnormal segregation can lead to cell abnormalities or cell death
