Brain glial cells, light micrograph C016 / 0523

Brain glial cells. Light micrograph of a section through brain tissue, showing numerous glial cells (dark). Glial cells, or neuroglia, are non-neural cells of the central nervous system (CNS, brain and spinal cord). They are the predominant cell type in brain tissue and are thought to outnumber neurons by 10 to 1. Their precise roles remain to be well understood. Glial cells provide physical and functional support to neurons and participate in maintenance of the blood-brain barrier by attachments to blood vessels (as seen here). Their star-shaped appearance means this type of glial cell are known as astrocytes. Magnification: x180, when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of brain glial cells, offering a glimpse into the complex inner workings of our central nervous system. The image, captured using a light microscope, reveals a section through brain tissue teeming with numerous dark-colored glial cells. These non-neural cells, known as astrocytes due to their star-shaped appearance, are believed to outnumber neurons by an astonishing ratio of 10 to 1. While their precise roles in brain function are still being unraveled by scientists, glial cells play crucial roles in supporting and maintaining the health of neurons. They provide both physical and functional support to these nerve cells while also participating in the maintenance of the blood-brain barrier through attachments to blood vessels. The magnified view offered by this print allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty inherent in these supportive cellular structures. It serves as a reminder that there is much more beneath the surface when it comes to understanding our own anatomy and neurological processes. This remarkable photograph not only highlights the importance of glial cells but also underscores how advancements in microscopy enable us to explore and appreciate the wonders hidden within our bodies.
