Chikungunya virus diffraction pattern
Chikungunya virus research. X-ray diffraction pattern of proteins from the Chikungunya virus that have been analysed in a synchrotron. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an insect-borne Alphavirus that is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying Aedes sp. mosquitoes. A synchrotron is a device that accelerates electrons in a vacuum tube to velocities approaching the speed of light. The electrons are kept in alignment by a series of special magnets. As the electrons travel around in a loop they radiate very bright and intense x-rays. This radiation can be used to study extremely small structures in materials science and molecular biology. Photographed at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate diffraction pattern of proteins from the Chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne Alphavirus that poses a significant threat to human health. Taken at the prestigious Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, this image represents cutting-edge research in virology and molecular biology. The photograph was captured using a synchrotron, an advanced device that accelerates electrons to nearly the speed of light within a vacuum tube. These high-speed electrons emit intense X-rays as they travel around in a loop, allowing scientists to study minuscule structures with remarkable precision. This technological marvel has revolutionized material science and biological research by enabling detailed analysis of microorganisms and protein crystals. At its core, this image symbolizes the intersection between technology and biology. By harnessing the power of synchrotrons, researchers can delve into the complex world of viruses like Chikungunya and gain valuable insights into their structure and behavior. Such knowledge is crucial for developing effective treatments or preventive measures against these infectious diseases. As we peer into this mesmerizing diffraction pattern, we are reminded of the immense potential held within scientific advancements. The collaboration between disciplines such as physics and microbiology at esteemed institutions like Pasteur Institute allows us to unravel nature's mysteries one crystal lattice at a time.
