Thymus gland, light micrograph C015 / 4970

Thymus gland. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from the thymus gland, part of the lymphoid system. The dense areas are the thymic cortex, which produces lots of lymphocytes. The lighter areas, the thymic medulla, produce fewer lymphocytes. In-between are blood vessels. This gland is located in the throat. Its role is to produce and mature T-lymphocytes (a specialised form of white blood cell), as well as other, more basic lymphocytes. It also controls the development of lymph nodes and the spleen. Magnification: x20 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the thymus gland, a vital component of our lymphoid system. The image, captured under a light microscope, reveals a section through tissue from the thymus gland in stunning detail. The dense areas visible in the photograph represent the thymic cortex, which plays a crucial role in producing numerous lymphocytes - specialized white blood cells that are essential for our immune system's proper functioning. Contrasting with these dense regions, we can observe lighter areas known as the thymic medulla that produce fewer lymphocytes. Situated within this fascinating landscape are delicate blood vessels connecting various parts of this gland located in our throat region. The significance of this remarkable organ extends beyond its production and maturation of T-lymphocytes; it also regulates the development of other critical components such as lymph nodes and spleen. This extraordinary image not only provides us with an insight into normal anatomical structures but also highlights their importance to maintaining overall health. With its white background emphasizing every intricate detail, this biology-inspired print is perfect for anyone interested in exploring human anatomy or studying immunology and endocrinology.
