Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, SEM

Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This Gram-negative rod- shaped motile bacteria is found in sea water. It can cause disease if ingested in contaminated seafood, or if an open wound is exposed to contaminated water. In healthy individuals it causes vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain, or dermatitis. In those with a compromised immune system or liver disease it can cause fever, decreased blood pressure, blistering skin lesions and septicaemia, and can be fatal. Magnification: x12, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria, a Gram-negative rod-shaped motile microorganism found in sea water. The vibrant colors and intricate details captured by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) highlight its biological complexity. While this bacterium may seem visually stunning, it poses potential health risks to humans. Ingesting contaminated seafood or exposing an open wound to contaminated water can lead to infection and disease. For healthy individuals, symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or dermatitis. However, those with compromised immune systems or liver disease face more severe consequences. Fever, decreased blood pressure, blistering skin lesions, septicaemia (blood poisoning), and even fatality are possible outcomes when infected by Vibrio vulnificus. At a magnification of x12,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this image allows us to appreciate the intricacies of these pathogenic microbes that exist within our environment. It serves as a reminder of the importance of proper food handling and hygiene practices when dealing with seafood consumption or exposure to potentially contaminated waters. This photograph from Science Photo Library provides valuable insights into microbiology and bacteriology while emphasizing the need for awareness surrounding public health concerns associated with harmful pathogens like Vibrio vulnificus.
