Section through a pine needle, LM

Section through a pine needle. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through the needle (leaf) of a pine tree, Pinus sp.. The centre of the needle is occupied by two vascular bundles (butterfly-shaped region, centre), each one made up of xylem (red and black) and phloem (blue) tissue. These are surrounded by a thick pericycle (large-celled region) and a layer of endodermis (necklace-like ring of large cells). The tissue surrounding the endodermis is known as mesophyll (green and brown speckled layer), which contain the resin ducts (not seen). In the epidermis (surface) are stomata (openings) for gas exchange

EDITORS COMMENTS
This light micrograph showcases a detailed section through a pine needle, revealing the intricate anatomy of this botanical wonder. The central focus lies on two vascular bundles resembling delicate butterfly wings, occupying the heart of the needle. These bundles consist of xylem tissue in striking red and black hues, responsible for water transport, and phloem tissue in calming shades of blue, which conducts sugars throughout the plant. Surrounding these vital vessels is a robust pericycle composed of large cells that provide structural support to the needle. A necklace-like ring formed by an endodermis layer further safeguards this precious structure. Mesophyll, depicted as a speckled layer in earthy greens and browns, envelops the endodermis and houses resin ducts essential for defense mechanisms (although not visible here). The surface epidermis reveals tiny stomata openings facilitating gas exchange with their surroundings. This transverse cut-out offers us a glimpse into the complex cellular composition that makes up this remarkable pine leaf. With its meticulous detail and vibrant colors, this print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate both the beauty and complexity found within nature's botanical creations. It serves as a reminder of how intricately interconnected all living organisms are at even microscopic levels.
