Myoglobin protein

Myoglobin. Computer model of the protein myoglobin that contains the iron-containing haem group (not seen). Myoglobin consists of a chain of 153 amino acids folded into a globin molecule that has a similar function to the globin units that are found in haemoglobin. The haem group surrounds an iron atom that can temporarily bind to oxygen and store it for later use. Myoglobin is found in muscle tissue, where the stored oxygen is used during strenuous exercise. The structure of the globin protein protects the haem group (a coenzyme) from being oxidised and destroyed by the oxygen it carries. Myoglobin has a molecular weight of 17, 800

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer-generated model of the myoglobin protein, highlighting its intricate structure and essential role in our bodies. Myoglobin is a vital muscle protein consisting of 153 amino acids intricately folded into a globin molecule. Although the iron-containing haem group is not visible in this image, it surrounds an iron atom capable of temporarily binding to oxygen for storage purposes. Myoglobin acts as a protective reservoir for oxygen within muscle tissue, ensuring its availability during intense physical activity or strenuous exercise. The globin protein's unique configuration shields the haem group from oxidation and destruction caused by the very oxygen it carries. With a molecular weight of 17,800, myoglobin plays a crucial part in metabolic processes by facilitating oxygen transport to muscles. This remarkable coenzyme safeguards the reserves needed for energy production during demanding workouts. The visual representation presented here combines scientific accuracy with artistic flair, employing computer artwork to illustrate this complex biochemical compound at the molecular level. This graphic depiction offers insights into proteomics and biochemistry while shedding light on how proteins like myoglobin contribute to our overall well-being. Captured by Science Photo Library, this stunning print serves as both an educational tool and an aesthetic masterpiece that celebrates the wonders of science and nature intertwined.
