Trachea, SEM
Trachea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of the trachea (windpipe). The trachea links the larynx (voice box) to the lungs. Its lining contains mucus-secreting goblet cells (brown) and epithelial cells bearing hair-like cilia (pale red). The mucus serves to trap tiny particles in inhaled air, whilst the movement of the cilia moves the mucus and foreign particles upwards out of the respiratory tract, helping to keep the lungs and airways free. Magnification: x630 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the trachea, a vital component of our respiratory system. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of the lining of the trachea, also known as the windpipe. The image reveals an array of fascinating details that contribute to its crucial function. The mucus-secreting goblet cells, depicted in shades of brown, play a pivotal role in trapping minuscule particles present in the air we breathe. Meanwhile, pale red epithelial cells bearing hair-like cilia can be observed throughout the lining. These cilia possess remarkable motility and work tirelessly to move both mucus and foreign particles upwards and outwards from our respiratory tract. By combining their efforts, these specialized cells ensure that our lungs and airways remain clear and free from potential obstructions or harmful substances. This microscopic ecosystem acts as a natural defense mechanism for our bodies against airborne pollutants. With a magnification level set at x630 on a 6x7cm scale, this SEM photograph offers us an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of human biology's inner workings. It serves as a reminder that even within ourselves lies an awe-inspiring world waiting to be explored by science enthusiasts and curious minds alike.
