DNA nucleosome, molecular model C016 / 8549

DNA nucleosome. Molecular model of a nucleosome, the fundamental repeating unit used to package DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) inside cell nuclei. DNA is the molecule that carries the genetic code that forms the basis of all life on Earth. It is a long molecule and has to be tightly coiled to fit inside the nucleus. DNAs double helix structure is shown here as a coiled spiral. The DNA is coiled round a core of histone proteins (multicoloured ribbons). The ribbons represent the molecular structure of the histone proteins. Each set of two DNA loops around a histone core is known as a nucleosome. Further compacting and packaging (not seen here) form the denser forms of chromatin, and eventually the cells chromosomes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a molecular model of a DNA nucleosome, the fundamental repeating unit responsible for packaging DNA inside cell nuclei. As the molecule that carries the genetic code forming the basis of all life on Earth, DNA's long structure necessitates tight coiling to fit within the nucleus. The image depicts this double helix structure as a beautifully coiled spiral. At the core of this intricate arrangement lies histone proteins, represented by multicolored ribbons in the photo. Each set of two DNA strands loops around these histone cores, collectively known as a nucleosome. It is important to note that further compacting and packaging processes not visible here result in denser forms of chromatin and eventually form chromosomes within cells. The visual representation highlights key elements such as protein models, ribbon structures symbolizing histones' molecular composition, and various terms related to genetics and proteomics. This stunning photograph provides an insightful glimpse into how our genetic material is organized and condensed within our cells. Captured by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY from Science Photo Library, this extraordinary print invites viewers to marvel at nature's incredible design while deepening their understanding of DNA packaging mechanisms at a microscopic level.
