Trachea with pollen grains, SEM

Trachea (windpipe) with pollen grains, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). When airborne particles such as pollen grains are breathed in through the nose or mouth, they can cause asthma or hayfever (allergic rhinitis). The surface of the trachea is made up of cells with hair-like cilia (beige). Together with mucus produced by goblet cells (yellow, smooth regions), these cilia serve to trap airborne particles and, by beating upwards in a wave-like motion, remove foreign matter from the airways and lungs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a trachea, or windpipe, with pollen grains. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the complex structure of this vital respiratory organ. The surface of the trachea is composed of specialized cells adorned with hair-like cilia in a beautiful beige hue. These cilia, working in harmony with mucus produced by goblet cells depicted in smooth yellow regions, play a crucial role in our body's defense system against airborne particles such as pollen grains. When we inhale through our nose or mouth, these tiny pollen grains can trigger allergic reactions like asthma or hayfever (allergic rhinitis). However, thanks to the remarkable mechanism within our trachea, foreign matter is efficiently trapped and removed from our airways and lungs. As we breathe in allergens like pollen grain-laden air, the cilia beat upwards rhythmically in wave-like motions. This motion propels trapped particles towards expulsion while preventing them from reaching deeper into our respiratory system. This stunning image not only highlights the biological marvels present within our bodies but also serves as a reminder of how delicate and susceptible we are to external factors that can impact our health. It underscores the importance of understanding allergies and respiratory disorders for both medical professionals and individuals seeking optimal health care practices.
