Ricin molecule, artwork C017 / 3656
Ricin molecule. Computer artwork showing the structure of a molecule of the toxic protein ricin. Ricin comprises two entwined amino acid chains; A (yellow) and B (blue). The A-chain is toxic, inhibiting protein synthesis in cells and causing cell death. It is carried into cells by the non-toxic B-chain, which is able to bind to the cell surface. Ricin is derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), making it easy to be used as a toxin by bioterrorists. Less than a milligram is enough to kill an adult. Inhaling ricin causes coughing, pulmonary oedema and death. If ingested, it causes gastroenteritis, liver and kidney damage and death from circulatory failure. There is no antidote. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the ricin molecule, a deadly toxin derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant. Created by artist Ramon Andrade, this computer artwork beautifully illustrates the complex composition of ricin, consisting of two intertwined amino acid chains: A (yellow) and B (blue). While the non-toxic B-chain facilitates entry into cells by binding to their surface, it is the toxic A-chain that wreaks havoc within cells by inhibiting protein synthesis and ultimately leading to cell death. The image serves as a stark reminder of ricin's potential as a bioterrorist weapon. Even in minuscule amounts, less than a milligram, this lethal substance can prove fatal for an adult. Inhalation causes coughing, pulmonary edema, and eventual demise while ingestion results in gastroenteritis, liver and kidney damage, and circulatory failure. Highlighted against a white background with meticulous detail and precision, this artwork not only captures the structural complexity of ricin but also emphasizes its biochemical properties. The illustration reveals crucial elements such as secondary and tertiary structures along with key components like enzymes and amino acids. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing depiction of danger encapsulated within beauty, we are reminded that there is no antidote for ricin poisoning. It stands as both an artistic marvel and a chilling testament to humanity's capacity for creating devastating biological weapons.
