Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Crimean- Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) viruses (brown). CCHF is transmitted to humans when they are bitten by an infected tick, or through contact with the body tissues of an infected patient. Symptoms develop 2-3 days after infection and include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Later, bleeding occurs from the bowels, kidneys, nose and gums. In severe cases, failure of the kidneys, liver, heart and lungs causes death. There is no cure, but with good supportive therapy most patients recover. Magnification: x200, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, a formidable pathogen that causes severe illness in humans. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), the CCHF viruses are depicted in striking brown hues, highlighting their microscopic yet potent presence. The image serves as a visual reminder of the mode of transmission for this dangerous virus. Humans become infected with CCHF when bitten by an infected tick or through contact with the body tissues of an already infected patient. The symptoms typically manifest within 2-3 days after infection and include fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea. As the disease progresses, bleeding can occur from various organs such as bowels, kidneys, nose, and gums. In severe cases, multiple organ failure leads to death. While there is currently no cure for CCHF, the photo emphasizes that supportive therapy plays a crucial role in aiding patients' recovery. With good medical care and intervention, many individuals afflicted by this viral menace have been able to overcome its devastating effects. With its magnification at x200,000 on a 6x7cm size scale captured through TEM technology – which allows visualization of structures at nanometer resolution – this photograph offers viewers a glimpse into the intricate world of infectious diseases. It serves as both a testament to scientific advancements in virology and pathology while also reminding us of our ongoing battle against these microscopic adversaries threatening human health worldwide.
