Giardia protozoan, TEM
Giardia protozoan. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Giardia sp. protozoan. It is a single-celled organism that has two cell nuclei (red). It also has flagella (tails, one sectioned at centre left) for movement. It is an intestinal parasite, and it attaches to the intestinal lining using its attachment disc. This is seen as a brush of comb-like cilia (pink, right-hand side of cell). This parasite can cause diarrhoea in humans. Infection is normally through ingestion of contaminated food or water.
