Gene activator protein F006 / 9406

Gene activator protein. Molecular model of catabolite gene activator protein (CAP, yellow) complexed with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, red and blue) and RNA polymerase (green and pink). CAP activates genes that enable bacteria to use an alternative energy source when glucose, the preferred energy source, is unavailable. Falling levels of glucose cause an increase in the messenger molecule cAMP, which binds to CAP enabling CAP to bind to DNA. cAMP binds at 2 sites either side of the centre of the CAP molecule. CAP binds to DNA at specific sites, causing it to bend. This enhances the ability of the enzyme RNA polymerase to make mRNA copies of the targeted gene

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of Gene activator protein F006 / 9406, also known as catabolite gene activator protein (CAP). In this stunning illustration against a white background, we can observe CAP (depicted in yellow) complexed with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), represented by red and blue strands, and RNA polymerase depicted in green and pink. CAP plays a crucial role in activating genes that enable bacteria to utilize an alternative energy source when their preferred fuel, glucose, is unavailable. As glucose levels decrease, the messenger molecule cAMP increases and binds to CAP. This binding allows CAP to attach itself to specific sites on DNA, causing it to bend. The bending enhances the ability of RNA polymerase enzyme to produce mRNA copies of targeted genes. The image beautifully captures the biochemical process involved in transcriptional control and genetic regulation. It highlights how CAP acts as a genetic switch that activates specific genes for bacterial survival under challenging conditions. With its detailed representation of molecular structures such as alpha helices and beta sheets within proteins, this artwork holds great significance for research in biology, medicine, genetics, proteomics, biochemistry, and microbiology. It provides valuable insights into understanding cellular mechanisms at a molecular level. This visually striking print serves as a reminder of the remarkable complexity present within biological systems while emphasizing the importance of alternative energy sources for microbial survival.
