Campylobacter oral bacteria, TEM

Campylobacter bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of two Campylobacter rectus bacteria. These Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria have single flagellum (hair-like strand) that is used for movement. This species is strongly associated with periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, in humans. Periodontal diseases are due to infections of the gum tissues around the teeth. They eventually lead to loosened and lost teeth due to a lack of support by the gums. C. rectus infections can be prevented by using antibacterial toothpastes and mouthwashes. Treatment is by professional cleaning and the insertion of wafers containing antibiotics beneath the gumline. Magnification: x27, 000 when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Campylobacter oral bacteria, providing a detailed glimpse into their microscopic world. The image, captured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), reveals two Campylobacter rectus bacteria in stunning color. These Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria possess a single flagellum, resembling a hair-like strand that enables their movement. Campylobacter rectus is notorious for its strong association with periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis in humans. These infections target the gum tissues surrounding the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss due to inadequate support from the gums. Fortunately, preventive measures can be taken against C. rectus infections by utilizing antibacterial toothpastes and mouthwashes. Treatment options include professional cleaning and the insertion of antibiotic-containing wafers beneath the gumline. With an impressive magnification of x27,000 when printed at 10 centimeters high, this photograph offers an up-close look at these pathogenic microorganisms responsible for causing dental ailments. Its vibrant colors and intricate details emphasize both the beauty and danger associated with these bacterial species. This image serves as a valuable resource for professionals in dentistry, microbiology, bacteriology, and medicine alike who seek to understand more about oral hygiene practices or study various pathogens affecting human health.
