Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium, TEM
Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium. This rod-shaped bacterium is found in the mouths of humans, where it generally causes no symptoms. However, in immuno-compromised individuals it can cause life-threatening infections. These include meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain) and endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart cavity). C. canimorsus is also found in the mouths of dogs, and may be transmitted to humans by dog bites. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification unknown
