Foot-and-mouth disease virus F006 / 9556

Foot-and-mouth disease virus. Molecular model of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus (Aphtae epizooticae) protein coat (capsid). FMD affects cloven-hooved mammals, commonly cattle and pigs, and is highly contagious. Antibodies are created by an animals immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects (antigens), such as bacteria and viruses. Each antibody is specific to a particular antigen. A specialised region (hypervariable region) on the antibody binds to a specific site on the antigens surface, rendering it ineffective. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a molecular model of the Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus, specifically highlighting its protein coat or capsid. FMD is a highly contagious illness that primarily affects cloven-hooved mammals like cattle and pigs. The intricate structure depicted in this image represents the virus responsible for causing this devastating disease. The immune system plays a crucial role in combating infections, including FMD. When exposed to foreign objects such as bacteria or viruses, an animal's immune system produces antibodies to identify and neutralize these antigens effectively. Each antibody is uniquely designed to target a specific antigen. In this visual representation, you can observe a specialized region called the hypervariable region on the antibody that binds specifically to certain sites on the surface of antigens, rendering them ineffective. This mechanism helps protect animals from further infection by preventing viral replication. The white background emphasizes the complexity and beauty of this molecular structure while providing clarity for scientific research purposes. Such detailed illustrations aid in understanding how viruses interact with their hosts and contribute significantly to advancements in medicine and healthcare practices. This print serves as both an informative tool for researchers studying foot-and-mouth disease and an artistic expression showcasing the intersection between science and design.
