Influenzavirus A, TEM

Influenzavirus A. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the influenza A virus, which can infect multiple species and is the most virulent human pathogen of the three influenza types. The virus consists of ribonucleic acid (RNA), surrounded by a nucleocapsid and a lipid envelope (yellow). In the envelope are two types of protein spike, haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which determine the strain of virus. The natural hosts of this virus are usually wild aquatic birds, which show few symptoms. However, from these wild birds, other species (such as domestic birds, pigs, horses and humans) can become infected. Magnification: x43, 200 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Influenzavirus A, a highly virulent human pathogen that belongs to the influenza A virus family. The image, captured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), reveals the intricate structure of this microbe in stunning detail. At its core, the virus contains ribonucleic acid (RNA) surrounded by a nucleocapsid and enveloped in a vibrant yellow lipid envelope. Within this envelope are two distinct protein spikes known as haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which play a crucial role in determining the strain of the virus. While wild aquatic birds serve as natural hosts for this influenza A virus, they typically exhibit minimal symptoms. However, from these avian species, other animals such as domestic birds, pigs, horses, and even humans can become infected. With a magnification of x43,200 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this false-colored TEM image provides valuable insights into the world of virology and microbiology. It serves as a reminder of how microscopic organisms like viruses can have significant impacts on our health and well-being. This remarkable photograph is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection featuring various diseases, conditions, viruses, and biological entities.
