Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium, TEM

Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium. This rod-shaped bacterium is found in the mouths of humans, where it generally causes no symptoms. However, in immuno-compromised individuals it can cause life-threatening infections. These include meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain) and endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart cavity). C. canimorsus is also found in the mouths of dogs, and may be transmitted to humans by dog bites. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacterium, a rod-shaped microbe found in both human and canine mouths. In most cases, this bacterium remains harmless within humans. However, for individuals with weakened immune systems, it poses a significant threat by causing severe infections that can be life-threatening. The image captured through coloured transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals the intricate details of this pathogenic bacteria. Its sectioned structure provides valuable insights into its composition and potential mechanisms of infection. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is known to cause two particularly dangerous conditions: meningitis and endocarditis. Meningitis refers to inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain, while endocarditis involves inflammation of the lining inside heart cavities. These infections are often triggered by dog bites as C. canimorsus also resides in canine mouths. Fortunately, antibiotics have proven effective in treating these infections caused by C. canimorsus. The magnification used to capture this image remains unknown but highlights the significance of microscopic examination when studying such pathogens. This photograph not only serves as a visual representation of an infectious agent but also emphasizes the importance of understanding microbial biology and bacteriology in combating diseases caused by harmful bacteria like Capnocytophaga canimorsus.
