Liver tuberculosis, light micrograph

Liver tuberculosis. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the liver of a patient with miliary tuberculosis (TB). A tubercle, a nodular lesion of infected dead tissue, is seen at left. The purple cells at the edge of the tubercle are lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Within the tubercle are epithelioid cells (also purple) and multinucleate giant cells (solid pink). Miliary TB is a chronic form of TB where Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria spread from the infected lungs to other organs. If untreated, this type of TB is fatal. Treatment involves a long course of several antibiotics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of liver tuberculosis, offering a glimpse into the intricate world of disease within the human body. The image captures a section through the liver of a patient suffering from miliary tuberculosis (TB), an aggressive form where Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria spread beyond the lungs to other organs. At first glance, one's attention is drawn to a tubercle, an ominous nodular lesion composed of infected dead tissue. Lymphocytes, distinguished by their purple hue, can be observed at the edge of this tubercle. These lymphocytes are white blood cells that play a crucial role in our immune response. Delving deeper into the tubercle reveals two distinct cell types: epithelioid cells and multinucleate giant cells. Both appear in shades of purple and solid pink respectively. Epithelioid cells are abnormal cellular structures associated with chronic inflammation, while multinucleate giant cells indicate an invasive infection. Liver damage caused by this chronic condition poses significant health risks if left untreated; therefore, treatment involves an extended course of several antibiotics. This false-colored diagnostic image not only provides valuable insight for medical professionals but also serves as a reminder of both the complexity and fragility of our bodies when faced with infectious diseases like TB.
