Greetings Card : E. coli bacterium, TEM
Cards from Science Photo Library
E. coli bacterium, TEM
E. coli bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an Escherichia coli bacterium in the early stages of binary fission, the process by which the bacterium divides. This Gram-negative bacillus (rod-shaped) bacterium normally inhabits the human intestines. Under certain conditions it may undergo rapid division, which increases its numbers to such an extent that it causes infection. E. coli cause 80% of all urinary tract infections, travellers diarrhoea and gastroenteritis in children. The hair-like appendages around the bacterium are pili, structures used for bacterial conjugation. Magnification: x25, 000 when printed at 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an Escherichia coli bacterium in the early stages of binary fission, a process by which the bacterium divides. The coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals intricate details of this Gram-negative bacillus, which is commonly found in the human intestines. Under certain circumstances, E. coli can undergo rapid division, leading to infections that range from urinary tract infections and travellers' diarrhea to gastroenteritis in children. The image highlights the hair-like appendages surrounding the bacterium known as pili, which are essential for bacterial conjugation. With a magnification of x25,000 when printed at 10cm wide, this false-coloured representation offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of microbiology. Microscopic photos like these play a crucial role in understanding pathogenic organisms and their behavior. By studying such images, scientists gain insights into cell division processes and identify potential targets for combating bacterial infections caused by E. coli. This remarkable photograph serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity present within our microbial world. It captures not only scientific subjects but also sparks curiosity about microbes that impact our health and well-being on a daily basis.
